Eastern Region Community Network

Overview

The Eastern Region Community Network serves the eastern part of Puerto Rico, which is southeast of San Juan. The region offers beaches, waterfalls, and the legendary El Yunque National Forest, the only subtropical rainforest in the U.S. The waters of the eastern region are ideal for snorkeling, fishing, diving, and outdoor activities. With much to offer, the region relies on tourism, and the communities have been working together on several initiatives to keep growing the economy.

However, natural disasters have increased the vulnerability of the rural communities throughout Puerto Rico and the eastern region. In 2017, Hurricane Maria hit the island, devastating communities, and the local economy. Five years later in 2022, Hurricane Fiona struck, knocking the power grid out and destroying roads, infrastructure, and ecosystems. EL Yunque’s recovery continues to this day. Additionally, the region struggles with socioeconomic situations including high level of poverty, unemployment, and population decline. The closure of the naval base Roosevelt Roads 20 years ago still affects the region to this day.

The East Region Community Network in partnership with Rural Partners Network is working to address resiliency strategies in the community. RPN is working with community leaders and stakeholders to address sustainable energy efforts, infrastructure, housing, and healthcare.
