Sierra Region

Overview

The Sierra Region Community Network consists of Lyon and Mineral County, which lie in the basin of the Sierra Mountain range over a total of 5,837 square miles. Lyon County was one of the nine original counties established in 1861 and is the fourth-smallest county. They have a population of 59,235 people currently living there and are known as Nevada’s largest producer of food and agriculture products. Lyon County has the incorporated towns of Fernley, the biggest city, and Yerington (county seat), along with Dayton, Silver City, Silver Springs, Smith Valley, and Stagecoach. The county is known for its cooper deposits, which are used in computers and cellphones. Mineral County is spread across 3,753 square miles, and has a population of 4,554, placing it as the fifth-least populous county in Nevada. Hawthorne is the largest community in Mineral County and is home of the Hawthorne Army Depot, the world’s largest ammunition depot. Walker Lake, Mina, and Schurz are also part of Mineral County.

The Sierra Region Community Network and Community Network Host, Northern Nevada Development Authority, are working together to build a network of partnerships and community members that can identify community needs throughout the counties. Together, NNDA and RPN hope to support development progress in both counties to address issues related to public services, infrastructure capacity, environmental risks, community engagement, and economic and private development.
