On December 11, 2023, the 2023 Rural LISC Annual Seminar was held in Coachella Valley, California. During the event, the participants shared challenges, opportunities, and best practices for developing strategies for rural communities. As part of this event, 3 regions of the Rural Partners Network in Puerto Rico hosted the first Rural LISC virtual watch parties in Puerto Rico. For the Southwest Region, the Esperanza Community in Guánica (in conjunction with the leaders of the Siberia and Arenas communities) served as hosts for the event. In collaboration with the residents of the three communities, the Municipality of Guánica, and the One Stop Career Organization, it was a great networking opportunity for the communities.
In addition to One Stop Career Center, organizations such as Hospital Damas de Ponce and the PR Science Trust (Community Health Promoters program) provided information and materials to those present. Small informational sessions were also held for those present about Rural Partners Network and the Signature Project for Guánica, which provides planning, project management and funding support to address short, medium, and long-term development needs in critical areas such as community economic development, vacant property management, and planning and placemaking. During the sessions, Sasha Dávila (HUD Representative) and Edil Montalvo (Special Assistant to the Mayor of Guánica) had interventions to talk about their roles in the project.
As a result of this event, the communities committed to organize the First Community Craft Festival, recognizing that this is an event that has not been held for a long time and that unites not only the communities of Guánica, but also attracts visitors who help to move the local economy. In addition, organizations such as Guánica Resiste, the Isabel Santiago Cultural Center and the Presbyterian Church showed interest in collaborating in the Rural Partners Network. In addition, RPN is searching for possible organizations and resources that can provide technical assistance to the Presbyterian Church for the creation of a non-profit organization that seeks to work with the older adults of Guánica. Also, One Stop Career Center and Empowered by Light began conversations to identify potential collaborations within and outside the Partner Network footprint. These are good examples that community events such as these are an essential part of the integration of RPN in the towns that make up the networks and contribute positively to the relationship between the communities and organizations that actively collaborate in the RPN regions.
Desde la Red del Suroeste de Puerto Rico: La Experiencia del Watch Party de Rural LISC
El 11 de diciembre de 2023 se llevó a cabo el Seminario Anual Rural LISC 2023 en Coachella Valley, California. Durante el evento, los participantes compartieron desafíos, oportunidades y mejores prácticas para el desarrollo de estrategias para comunidades rurales. Como parte de este evento, 3 regiones de la Red de Socios Rurales en Puerto Rico organizaron los primeros tres eventos virtuales de Rural LISC en Puerto Rico. Para la Región Suroeste, la Comunidad Esperanza en Guánica (en conjunto con los líderes de las comunidades Siberia y Arenas) sirvieron como anfitriones del evento. En colaboración con los residentes de las tres comunidades, el Municipio de Guánica y la organización One Stop Career, fue una gran oportunidad de crear colaboraciones para las comunidades.
Además de One Stop Career Center, organizaciones como el Hospital Damas de Ponce y PR Science Trust (programa de Promotores Comunitarios de Salud) brindaron información y materiales a los presentes. También se realizaron pequeñas sesiones informativas para los presentes sobre la Red de Socios Rurales y el Proyecto Emblemático para Guánica, que pretende brindar apoyo de planificación, gestión de proyectos y financiamiento para abordar necesidades de desarrollo de corto, mediano y largo plazo en áreas críticas como el desarrollo económico comunitario, plan de gestión de propiedades desocupadas y creación de espacios comunitarios (Placemaking). Durante las sesiones, Sasha Dávila (Representante de HUD) y Edil Montalvo (Asistente Especial del Alcalde de Guánica) tuvieron intervenciones para hablar sobre su papel en el proyecto.
Como resultado de este evento, las comunidades se comprometieron a organizar el Primer Festival Comunitario de Artesanía, reconociendo que este es un evento que hace mucho tiempo no se realizaba y que une no sólo a las comunidades de Guánica, sino que también atrae visitantes que ayudan a mover la economía local. Además, organizaciones como Guánica Resiste, el Centro Cultural Isabel Santiago y la Iglesia Presbiteriana mostraron interés en colaborar en la Red de Socios Rurales. En adición, se ha comenzado a gestionar la búsqueda de posibles organizaciones y recursos que puedan proveer asistencia técnica a la Iglesia Presbiteriana para la creación de una organización sin fines de lucro que busca trabajar con los adultos mayores de Guánica. Además, One Stop Career Center y Empowered by Light iniciaron conversaciones para identificar posibles colaboraciones dentro y fuera de la huella de Partner Network. Estos son buenos ejemplos de que eventos comunitarios como estos son parte esencial de la integración de RPN en los municipios que conforman las redes y contribuyen positivamente a la relación entre las comunidades y organizaciones que colaboran activamente en las regiones de RPN.
