Puerto Rico is a recipient of Rural LISCs’ technical assistance support that RPN is funding through a cooperative agreement. Therefore, when Rural LISC held their 2023 Annual Seminar and dedicated a day to RPN communities, the three community networks of Puerto Rico were included as part of the coordination of the virtual watch parties.
For the invitation, organization and venue, RPN Puerto Rico decided to share the lead with the community collaborators and host entity. For the Central Mountain Region, our collaborators: Barrio Eléctrico Organization, PathStone (host), San Diego Community Residents Association and the Municipality of Coamo, took the opportunity to expand and leverage the virtual watch party into a community engagement activity.
To make use of our time due to the 4-hour time zone difference, the Central Mountain Region called the participants in earlier so that each of entities were given time during the morning to present on the services they currently provide to the community. With an overwhelming show of approximately 35 participants coming to support and convene. The Barrio Eléctrico Organization offered updates on the progress of the Central Mountain Region signature project and to support the Central Mountain Region’s resiliency through secure housing, access to potable water and reliable clean energy. This project will complement the current energy transition process of the Community of San Diego in Coamo, with the Department of Energy as a lead agency, aiming to strengthen the community’s resilience and self-sufficiency through the installation of solar panels in existing low-income and elderly households. An additional project includes the powering of the community’s aqueduct systems with solar panels.
Between the activities and prior to the presentations and the seminar, the community offered a typical Christmas lunch (cooked and served by the residents themselves), and the Municipality 's Mayor, Honorable Mayor Juan Carlos García Padilla, also participated in the community outreach and as an attendee of the watch party. In addition, the municipal administration distributed bags of much needed groceries among the community members. The bags leftover from the event were distributed to the elderly homes in Coamo, PR.
As a result of this event, Barrio Eléctrico and PathStone began collaborative conversations and plans for the benefit of the Central RPN Region. This is a good example that community events like this are an essential part of the integration of RPN in the rural municipalities that create the networks and contribute positively to the relationship between the communities and organizations that actively participate in the Rural Partners Network regions in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico RPN se beneficia del apoyo de asistencia técnica de Rural Lisc a través de un acuerdo de cooperación. Cuando Rural Lisc celebró su seminario anual en Coachella Valley, CA, dedicó su primer día -11 de diciembre de 2023- a las comunidades de RPN, las tres redes comunitarias de Puerto Rico se incluyeron como parte del seminario de forma virtual interactiva, lo que se le llamó un “Watch Party".
Para la promoción, organización y lugar del evento virtual, RPN Puerto Rico decidió compartir la coordinación con los colaboradores de la comunidad, la administración municipal y la organización anfitriona de la Red Comunitaria Central Montañosa: Organización Barrio Eléctrico, PathStone Corp. (anfitrión), la Asociación de Residentes de la Comunidad de San Diego y la Administración del Municipio de Coamo. Utilizando la invitación del evento virtual para convocar a la comunidad, se decidió ampliar la duración para celebrar una reunión comunitaria.
Debido a la diferencia de hora de 4 horas, en lugar de a las 9:00 a.m. (hora del Pacífico), el seminario virtual de Rural Lisc comenzó en Puerto Rico a la 1:00 p.m. (hora del este). La Region Central Montañosa convocó a los participantes a presentarse más temprano, a eso de las (9:00 am). En cuanto a la asistencia total de este evento, entre entrada y salida fue de alrededor de 30 a 35 participantes.
Cada una de estas entidades claves de la red tuvo un tiempo durante la mañana para presentar a la comunidad los servicios que actualmente ofrecen, además la organización Barrio Eléctrico brindó actualizaciones sobre los avances del proyecto insignia de la región central montañosa, esto en adición a la participación virtual de los presentes en el seminario virtual.
Entre las actividades previas a las presentaciones y el seminario, la comunidad ofreció un almuerzo típico navideño (cocinado y servido por los propios residentes), y el Alcalde del Municipio, Honorable Juan Carlos García Padilla, también participó en la presentación a la comunidad y como oyente del Rural Lisc Watch Party. En adición la administración municipal del municipio de Coamo, distribuyo bolsas de compras a todos los residentes que asistieron al seminario virtual. Las compras que no fueron distribuidas durante el seminario virtual fueron luego llevadas a los centros de envejecientes del pueblo de Coamo y otras comunidades.
Como resultado de este evento, Barrio Eléctrico y PathStone iniciaron conversaciones y planes de colaboración en beneficio de la Región Central de la RPN. Este es un buen ejemplo de que eventos comunitarios como este son parte esencial de la integración de RPN en los municipios rurales que crean las redes y contribuyen positivamente a la relación entre las comunidades y organizaciones que colaboran activamente en las regiones de la Red de Socios Rurales en Puerto Rico.
