Clarksdale, Mississippi, the county seat of Coahoma County, is a city deeply rooted in the rich tradition of the Blues. As home to many music legends, Clarksdale boasts a unique charm, known for its welcoming spirit, soulful people, vibrant art scene, and delicious food. Situated just south of Memphis, TN, this small rural town has a population of 13,969 residents.

Over the years, Clarksdale has faced significant social and economic changes that have challenged its growth, particularly in the areas of poverty and business development. In response to these challenges, the City of Clarksdale, led by the mayor’s office staff—Millicent Dixon and Laketha Covington—sought to seize an opportunity presented by Michelle Webster, Community Liaison for the Tri Counties North Delta Network. Together with Communities Unlimited, Inc., they organized a small business workshop aimed at helping local entrepreneurs overcome obstacles and succeed.

The workshop, held at the Clarksdale Civic Center on September 9, 2024, attracted around 25 eager participants, each seeking guidance on how to start or expand their businesses.

Latoyia Morgan, Training Coordinator and Management Consultant for Communities Unlimited, Inc., led the session, providing a comprehensive overview of the day's topics. The workshop covered key areas such as financial literacy, strategic planning and budgeting, cash flow management, understanding credit, loan options, and the language of business. Additionally, it focused on how to start and grow a business while also educating participants on avoiding predatory lenders.

This workshop is the first of six that will be offered to Clarksdale residents, with the goal of equipping current and future business owners with the strategies, tools, and knowledge they need to thrive. The Rural Partners Network is committed to supporting these efforts by facilitating the series, ensuring that rural communities like Clarksdale have every opportunity to succeed right where they are.
